I am a migraine sufferer. I used to get them often and can detect when one is going to hit me. I feel suddenly sluggish, a little dizzy, and constantly yawn. Then BOOM, the migraine hits like a wave, lasts for DAYS, and feels utterly debilitating. Powering through responsibilities while in a painful haze is impossible.
I lead my responsibilities with a ton of intensity. I enter such a zone that my extreme focus can sometimes make me lose track of what’s going on around me. Do you ever get so immersed in something that you lose track of time, meals, or civilization? As much as you are in the flow of work and can’t be interrupted, your body actually needs you to intervene.
Migraine after migraine, colds that turned to sinus infections, and digestive issues I associated with age were not enough for me to make that correlation. Thank goodness I finally did.
Where did I begin? I drank more water.
I used to drink water with meals. It’s actually the only time I drank anything and never gave it a 2nd thought. After my 4th cold in 1 year, my doctor looked at me and said, “Alyson, how much water do you drink?” That’s when I realized mealtime wasn’t enough.
At first, I added 1 glass of water mid-morning. That was easy.
It gave me momentum to add 1 glass of water before dinner. That was easy too.
Now I drink up to 64oz of water per day.
This is what changed over time:
I’m more healthy. Water removes toxins and reduces inflammation. I haven’t had a cold in over 2.5 years and my migraines decreased from 1x month to 1x-2x per year.
I’m more focused. Water delivers oxygen to the brain giving power to focus and stay alert.
Helps allergies. Dehydration increases histamine production. Drinking water reduces the symptoms.
My skin looks brighter. Enough said.
This is what I do to stay on track:
*I use a 64 oz. jug to keep track of how much I am drinking.
*I keep water at my bedside and drink a glass first thing in the morning.
*I add fruit for flavor or supplements for an added boost.
Drinking water led me to better health. I call it a Beauty Booster bc it has the power to change the trajectory of your life. In my new 12wk program, Burnout to Beautiful, I introduce Beauty Boosters as part of a very holistic path toward well-being.
